RDS-Certified Down FAQ
Where does RDS-Certified Down come from?
Down feathers are a byproduct of animal use in the food industry. While this may seem unrelated to the feathers in your new jacket, auditing supply chains and monitoring the birds through their lifespan is extremely important.

Only 2-3% of the value of the bird comes from the feathers. The remaining value is found in the food industry, where live-pluck and force-feed practices can be detrimental to the welfare of these birds. From the moment they hatch, when RDS is involved, geese and ducks are respected every step of the way.

On the 3,080 farms worldwide, for the more than 400 million birds now certified by RDS, we know with confidence these animals will be handled with the care and respect they deserve.
What are the 5 freedoms for animal welfare?
1. Freedom from hunger and thirst

2. Freedom from discomfort

3. Freedom from pain, injury, or disease

4. Freedom to express normal behavior

5. Freedom from fear and distress

The Responsible Down website does a great job of outlining their philosophy, process, and goals as they relate to these freedoms and their birds.

Just how committed is RDS to the safety of their birds?
Each stage in the supply chain is audited by a third-party certification body to ensure every step of the process respects their standard. At the top of the list, RDS ensures live-plucking and force-feeding are prohibited.

The ultimate show of respect: in the event of an emergency, an evacuation plan for the birds must be in place.
What's so special about RDS-Certified Down?
Trust comes down to traceability. To protect the geese and ducks, we need to know they are safe every step of the way. As a whole, we need an intimate understanding of our supply chain and where each ingredient, each ounce of material comes from. With RDS down, we can trace our supply right back to the region and farm. Pretty incredible.
