Cotton with a Conscience
Ethically-made clothing should be the standard in the apparel industry. But what does it mean when a product is ethically made? It means we consider the impact of our actions and let our values guide our decisions as we make our clothing.

Organic cotton is a great example of our efforts to support ethically-made clothing. It drinks less water, uses rainwater more efficiently, eliminates GMOs and harmful chemicals from your closet, and so much more.

Organic Cotton FAQs
How do you certify your organic cotton?
Any organic content claim we make can be certified to either the OCS or the GOTS standard. We do not currently standardized all of our products to the same standard because we allocate organic cotton through different supply chains. We have given our suppliers some flexibility to become compliant.
What is used for fertilizer and pest controls In organic cotton farms/production?
The US government has a short list of naturally occurring (non synthetic) and synthetic materials allowed as fertilizers for the commercial organic production. Alternate ways that farmers protect their land range from crop rotations to structural pest management. Each farm will be a little different, but as long as they are in compliance with national laws, they will obtain certification.
How does growing organic cotton reduce water usage?
Organic Cotton typically has a higher yield and equal/superior quality to conventional grown cotton, therefore supporting the statement that it reduces water usage. Additionally the soil prep requirements for organic farming can increase the water-holding capacity within the land.
How much water can I really save by switching to organic cotton?
Replace one conventional cotton tee with an organic cotton tee, and you save 115 gallons of water. That’s the same amount of water as letting the average shower run for nearly an hour.
How long has prAna been using organic cotton?
Since the early 2000s. Our founders attended a sustainable textile conference where they met organic cotton suppliers. On the way home from that conference, they called HQ and made the switch to organic cotton on as many styles as they could. Just like that. For them, it was an easy choice. The right choice.

After the successful launch of this initial effort with organic cotton, we tested and perfected the process, always pushing to make an even bigger impact on the apparel industry. We gathered up all the learnings and resources and our dedicated team and defined an initiative in 2014 to have all cotton usage at prAna be organic by 2019.
Positive Change through Clothing
We don’t leave sustainability to chance, we work hard to ensure we’re continuing to have a positive impact on the planet and its people. The values that forged the creation of prAna still ring true here today. This isn’t just an initiative, and we aren’t just getting started. We’ve got a long way to go, but we believe this is the right thing to do for our planet, our oceans, and our land.
