“Meeting people who have traveled all over the world sparked an energy in me that I had never felt before.”
History of Ellen’s Adventure The first spark for adventure was ignited when Ellen studied abroad in college. She had never truly experienced the energy she witnessed in others as they traveled the world. Every time she reads about a new place or sees one of her friends challenging themselves on a comfort-free adventure, she gets the itch to get out into the world, to explore new places and experience new cultures.

The most remarkable trip so far for Ellen involved hiking the Inca Trail to Machu Picchu. It was rewarding in a spiritual, emotional, and physical sense. She witnessed herself grow and become stronger throughout the training, which created a sense of pride and energy to continue her journey.
When she isn’t traveling and exploring historical sites across continents, EJ can be found exploring trails near her home, snowboarding in Big Bear, bouldering at her local climbing gym, and doing Wild Thing during Rock n’ Roll yoga.

Tips, Advice, Inspiration & Wild Llamas 1. Favorite season? Probably fall because it’s the perfect season for hiking. Also growing up in the Midwest, it’s a very magical time of year when the leaves are changing colors. 2. Favorite adventures & sports? I love finding crazy adventures when I travel to new places. Pushing myself to try something new and experience something I couldn’t do at home is such a rush! For instance, hiking/swimming into the Actun Tunichil Muknal cave in Belize where the Mayans would go to do their sacrifices to the gods was one of the coolest/adrenaline rushing experiences! I could never do something like that at home.
Other than that, I also love hiking, camping, snowboarding, yoga, and stand up paddle boarding.
3. Favorite Adventure Venues? I go on at least 1 if not 2 international trips a year, and then I try to plan weekend trips to places in the US. But really every weekend I’m looking for something new to try near my house. 4. How do you prepare for these trips? For my trips, I get a little nerdy in my planning and use google docs to research, plan, and budget everything. 5. What’s in the pack for longer adventures? I’m pretty good at packing light on my trips. I only allow myself my 45L backpack so I really have to be smart about what I am packing. 6. Biggest concerns for clothing on these adventures? Clothing that is versatile and easy to wear in multiple situations is essential. I also don’t like anything that will wrinkle too much or that is too bulky. Quick dry clothes are my best friend when I travel because they are great in hot weather and if I need to wash something in the sink and rewear it, I don’t want to have to wait 2 days for it to dry. Especially in humid climates.

7. Have you reached your peak? Right now! Now that I am settled in my career, I actually have the time and money to go on these adventures. For the past 4 years I’ve been exploring the globe as much as I can and while I still can. 8. If you could relive one adventure beginning to end? Hiking the Inca trail to Machu Picchu. It was one of the coolest, most rewarding, and most spiritual adventures I’ve ever done. The journey really began the minute I bought the plane ticket there and started training. I had to work so hard to be able to get my body physically and mentally ready to take this on. I had never done anything like it in my life. Seeing myself grow and get stronger with every practice hike made me so proud of myself and gave me the energy to keep going. Then once we were actually on the trial, it was so surreal to be doing a hike that the Incas built so long ago was so unimaginable I don’t even know how to describe the feeling. Plus, to really top it off, there were wild llamas on the trail! 9. Bucket list trip? It would have to be going to Patagonia and taking a boat trip to Antarctica. It’s just so expensive and I would want it to be at least a month long trip. Need to save the money and the timing will have to be right. 10. Who defines adventure for you? Really my friends and the people I meet while traveling. Anytime I hear about a new place or see a friend post about their next adventure, it makes me so excited for them and lights an energy inside of me to find my next adventure. One of my most inspiring friends is Alisha Bube, she gets to travel the world for the Travel Channel and HGTV. I never know where her next trip/adventure will be, but I always know I will be jealous of it. 11. What makes them an adventure original? Traveling the world and putting yourself into strange and uncomfortable and challenging situations isn’t for everyone, but when I meet people who do, it makes me really admire them and respect them for what they can and have accomplished. 12. How have they inspired your adventures? It really started when I studied abroad in college. Meeting people who have traveled all over the world sparked an energy in me that I had never felt before. The sense of adventure and the unknown was something I hadn’t really ever thought about. Putting myself in a situation where the first time I left the country I was going to be living there for 4 months was terrifying, but once I was there I was hooked. And the more I talked to people and met people who had been to other places, the bigger the itch to get out into the world and explore new places and cultures grew inside of me.
