Materials to Make prAna Products
Make it Good, Make it Right.
Environmentally conscious materials
prAna uses the term ‘environmentally conscious’ for our materials when they have a reduced environmental impact as compared to conventional materials. For example, lower impact might mean less energy to produce a fiber as with using recycled polyester and utilizing organic cotton reduces the amount of pesticides used as compared to regular cotton.
Understanding the full impact of a fiber from its origin, to its processing, to its finishing is a large task. We are committed to understanding the full impact of our products and seeking out solutions that are more sustainable. We see this journey as a never ending learning experience – for what is sustainable today may not be sustainable in the future.
So prAna, with consultation from an environmental textiles firm, created a scorecard for materials that is used by our design and development teams as they create prAna’s newest products to measure improvements in our environmental impact.
Making mindful goods means always looking for a better way to make them. We are increasing the use of sustainable textiles such as organic cotton, hemp, recycled polyester and Tencel® whenever possible.

- Organic is Worth Investing In
Conventionally grown cotton consumes approximately 25% of the insecticides and more than 10% of the pesticides used in the world. Organic production systems on the other hand replenish and maintain soil fertility, reduce the use of toxic and persistent pesticides and fertilizers, and build biologically diverse agriculture. Third-party certification organizations verify that organic producers use only methods and materials allowed in organic production. Organic cotton is grown without the use of toxic and persistent pesticides and synthetic fertilizers. In addition, federal regulations prohibit the use of genetically engineered seed for organic farming.

prAna uses hemp fiber that comes from the Industrial hemp plant. The environmental benefits that are associated with hemp come from the growing attributes of the plant. Industrial hemp is virtually drought resistant, has the ability to grow in various types of conditions, and no herbicides or pesticides are required. Without the need for irrigation, and pesticides or fertilizers, hemp’s impact is very minimal.
Recycled polyester commonly comes from post consumer plastic (PET) water and soda bottles, but also can come from pre-consumer waste. Recycled polyester is a better alternative because it relies on a recycled material meaning you don’t have to factor in all the toxics and energy used in manufacturing the plastic in the first place. So less energy, therefore Greenhouse Gas emissions and water are required to manufacturing compared to virgin materials.
Textile Exchange is a non-profit 501(c)(3) organization operating internationally committed to the responsible expansion of sustainable textiles across the global textile value chain. PrAna has been an active member since 2001; the organization has become an essential resource as prAna folds more sustainability initiatives into our operations and products.
Making a positive difference means being more conscious of the materials and processes we employ. prAna has become a bluesign® systems partner to hold ourselves accountable as well as provide guidance for environmental health and safety for workers, the environment and our customers.
What does this mean to you? The apparel industry uses resources and materials to make our products. We must be mindful of the impact of our decisions. Our Environmental Health & Safety management program specifically looks at the dyeing and finishing step in the process focusing on energy and water efficiency and ensuring chemicals are not harmful to workers, the environment and you, our customers. To ensure this, we have become bluesign system partners and work to implement their standard in our supply chain.
Headquartered in Switzerland, bluesign is a worldwide standard that is applied to production chains to measure the safety and sustainability of raw materials used by chemical and manufacturing companies. Because bluesign uses the latest scientific technology and starts at the beginning of the production process, companies are able to tackle environmental and safety issues at their root.
For prAna, the bluesign partnership allows us to assess every aspect of our supply chain for guaranteed environmental and human safety, as well as easily identify like-minded companies for future partnerships. Globally, bluesign partners embrace a holistic approach to production that’s a step further than simply ‘eco-friendly’, and considers such additional aspects as air and water emissions, occupational health and resource productivity – that’s a step forward that we believe in, and are proud to be part of.
prAna became a bluesign system partner in March 2012. We since have required our entire supply chain to commit to following the bluesign systems substance list. (Click here to access and then scroll to the bottom of the page to click on the bluesign System Substance List – BSSL). And as importantly, we as a company have committed to using more bluesign approved fabrics and trims because we can ensure that they have met the highest standards for chemical management. This means that harmful chemicals will not be discharged, because they were never used in the manufacturing process to begin with.
Which brings us back to you. You’re wearing the end result of the very best practices in corporate mindfulness. Or, a great shirt (jacket, skirt, pants…) that you can truly feel good about. If you’d like to learn more, visit www.bluesign.com.
