Mark fell in love with the power of nature when he moved to the US in the early 90s from England. The dramatic landscape and the vast stillness of the High Sierras inspired him to bring his meditation practice outdoors to learn from the wisdom and serenity of nature. Since then he has been an avid hiker, backpacker, kayaker, and outdoor adventurer. His passion is to help others explore the rich relationship between meditation and natural world. Mark leads nature based meditation retreats from Alaska to Peru, based on his book – Awake in the Wild – Mindfulness in Nature as a Path of Self-Discovery. Mark’s also passionate about writing, especially nature inspired poetry and is working on his first book of poetry. When he’s not writing or teaching you’ll find him stomping around the rolling hills of Marin County, biking along the coast or floating in a kayak out on the San Francisco Bay. Mark wears many other hats in his life. He is a Buddhist meditation teacher based at Spirit Rock Meditation Center and leads retreats around the world. Out of a desire to bring the inner world of meditation to the mainstream culture, Mark founded The Mindfulness Institute which brings mindfulness practices and coaching into corporations and secular life. He also enjoys counseling people on how to live with awareness and compassion in the world.
