Get To Know Sage Rountree

A former couch potato, Dr. Sage Rountree, began running to help relieve stress during graduate school and to wear out her large chocolate Lab. More than a dozen years later, she’s run all sorts of races—everything from the 400M to ultramarathons, and triathlons of all distances. She now coaches others to do the same.

To find balance from the demands of training, Sage added yoga to her routine. She loved the way the disciplines complemented each other and felt inspired to share her experiences. Thus far, she’s written six books on yoga for athletes and on athletic recovery; her latest is Everyday Yoga. She also writes on yoga for Runner’s World and on training for Yoga Journal.

Sage’s classes, training plans, videos, books, and articles make yoga and endurance exercise accessible to everyone. As an endurance sports coach and a yogi, her goal is to help people find a work and rest balance in their daily lives. She knows that a mindful approach to training and yoga will optimize how you use your body and breath to achieve a sense of balance, connection, and peace.

Sage is on the faculty at the Kripalu Center for Yoga and Health and teaches online at sageyogateachertraining.com. Her students, who compete in sports from ice dancing to football, include casual athletes, Olympians, and many University of North Carolina athletes and coaches. She lives in North Carolina where she co-owns the Carolina Yoga Company and directs the 200- and 300-hour yoga teacher trainings. You can find her schedule at sagerountree.com.

Q & A

How has your sport affected your relationships?

Definitely in a good way. Endurance sports have taught me to hang in there—that any storm will pass.

If you could live anywhere in the world where would it be and why?

I’m pretty darn happy where I am, in central North Carolina. We have mountains to our west and the coast to our east. That said, Vancouver, BC, has both in one place, plus a gorgeous, glistening metropolitan center; an amazing park for running; and kind people to boot.

Who’s your biggest fan?

My father. He seems to still be amazed that his couch potato daughter is an Ironman, yoga teacher, and author of six books.

Vanilla or chocolate?

Chocolate, ideally with caramel and sea salt, too.

What’s your dream car?

Tesla Model S in gray metallic with a gray interior and glossy obeche wood trim. I’d take red, though.

What’s your favorite piece of prAna gear?

Just one?!? I reach for my Kira Tops more than anything else. The fabric is so soft! I also love all of the leggings and the E.C.O. Mat, too.

Favorite rainy day activity?

Reading under a blanket on the sofa.

Tea or Coffee?

Coffee, black, two cups with the paper every morning.

What song do you love to sing in the car?

With my kids, Bohemian Rhapsody by Queen; alone, every single song by John Fullbright.

If you could be known for one thing what would it be?

Helping people relax.

What was the scariest thing you’ve ever done and are you glad you did it?

Swimming in the sub-55-degree waters of English Bay in Vancouver at the 2008 World Triathlon Championships. There was a very high chop and they canceled the swim shortly after my wave went. It was intense dealing with both the cold and the waves at once. I’m so glad I did it—it put me in a place of pure presence, body awareness, and survival instinct I have only ever found during un-anaesthetized childbirth!

Why did you choose to partner with prAna?

The heart and soul are there. From their interest in sustainable practices and organic fabrics, to staying close to their roots in climbing and yoga culture, prAna is a wonderful company and I am very proud to represent it.
