Here Amy talks about what attracted her to the prAna brand…
prAna’s continuous efforts to grow the percentage of sustainably made products in their line is a huge reason I chose to align myself with their company.
Over the years it’s been important for me, as a yoga teacher, to be an example for others and wearing clothes made from environmentally conscious and durable materials was part of that.
It seems trivial, and definitely a “first world problem,” but because I’m so conscious of the environment and sustainability, I’ve actually struggled to figure out what to wear when I teach and practice yoga!
Early on in my career, and before partnering with prAna, I used to insist on wearing only organic cotton. But after enough teaching trips and cycles through the wash I realized the clothes I had chosen quickly became threadbare and unprofessional looking, simply because they hadn’t been designed for performance. So, I swung in the opposite direction and started wearing synthetic yoga wear, figuring I was at least getting more use out of the clothes and buying less.
It was not until I got my hands on the full line of prAna yoga clothes that I realized I could have the best of both worlds – clothing that holds up in the wash, but is sustainably produced with care and consideration for people and the planet.
The biggest distinction I’ve experienced in wearing prAna apparel, believe it or not, is in the “energy” of the fabrics. Maybe I’m extra sensitive, but I can feel the sensitivity and positive intention that has been put into the process of getting these clothes to the practitioner.
My relationship with prAna inspires me to realize my dreams. Their support of the yoga and outdoor communities, not just with apparel and props, but with their encouragement, enthusiasm, community building activities, philanthropy, and sense of adventure are inspiring.
This year I hope to continue training to improve my underwater skills so I can work with my partner, Taro Smith, to create images with marine animals that encourage others to help protect these amazing creatures.
It’s been hugely meaningful to be an ambassador for prAna. I’ve been blessed to travel to Costa Rica, Bali, and Nicaragua with the crew. The team is made up of real yogis, climbers, surfers, and outdoors enthusiasts who love to have fun, respect nature, and have a deep wish to be stewards of the planet.
prAna is the real deal, that’s why I wouldn’t work with anyone but them.
