Shiva Rea: Rocking Yoga On The Mall
Power to the People under one sky, one earth.
On May 3rd, about 6,000 people gathered for Yoga on the Mall, bringing Washington D.C’s diverse and thriving yoga community together for a morning of yoga under the Washington Monument where many historic gatherings have occurred from the first large march in 1913 for Women’s right to vote to Dr King’s great civil rights “March on Washington” to the Longest Walk bringing indigenous people together who walked from all over North America to the Mall.
So after a week of spring showers that created flash floods in the DC area, the sun came up for an ecstatic spring day. With teachers from the DC community and a great ensemble of local Ghanaian drummers, I had the opportunity to “serve the people” in a hour session of Prana Flow-Energetic Vinyasa.
I was compelled in the beginning to get off the stage and go to the pulse of the circle. Some people were initially reluctant to role up their mat but when we all linked to each other for the universal sound you could feel the hairs on your arm stand up as the tremendous power of gathering together was palpable. Like plugging into a human electrical current.
We then began to move together with awareness of the power of what we all ultimately share beyond what often separates us: breath, heart rhythm, awareness, earth, the light of the sun. There were people of all political, social, religious and cultural backgrounds and here we were breathing together. This is no small feat in a town like D.C. In the end, we will super-charged with positive Vitamin CC – collective consciousness. People – we can move together.
