Chadd Konig’s Philippines Reflection
Disaster. Relief. Rebuild.
I am beginning to see. Ordinary seeing occurs in the physical, exterior dimension. What I am seeing here is the ultimate testament of true well being and happiness. I am a witness to their origins and what need be practiced in order to sustain them.
What I see in the ‘physical’ is severe destruction to structures, land and economy. Some fear in the natives eyes. But conscious fear.
I felt as though the intention of this trip was more to be ‘present’ with the community rather than to ‘help’. Yes, we are offering to help in the rebuilding of essential structures within the town of Sulangan, but as we know these structures are very impermanent.
What lives eternally, I reckon, is the kinship and equality that is born thorough the presence with the one and each. An offering of your life, time, space and unconditional love. Nothing tangible can bring the contentedness that emanates from those I see here.
Upon my arrival home I opened Thoreau…

“A man is not a good man to me because he will feed me if I should be starving, or warm me if I should be freezing, or pull me out of a ditch if I should ever fall into one.
I can find you a Newfoundland dog that will do as much…
His goodness must not be a partial or transitory act, but a constant superfluity, which costs him nothing and of which he is unconscious”
~ Henry David Thoreau
