Jimmy Webb: Rocks For Research
In January I received a call from Charlotte local, Charlie Long, regarding an event he was attempting to put together to raise money for Type 1 Diabetes. He asked me if I would be psyched to come out for the event and help out by putting on a couple clinics and showcasing some never before seen video of my trip to Switzerland. I was of course intrigued and we got my tickets booked immediately. This event was Charlie’s first go at putting on a fundraiser and he really knocked it out of the park.
Rocks for Research was held at the Inner Peaks climbing gym just outside of downtown Charlotte North Carolina. The venue was a perfect set up as the gym was the perfect size and layout to hold a large get together. They filled us up on pizza, tasty finger foods, and provided all day entertainment from 3pm – 11pm. To keep the energy high DJ Kurt Smith was in the house laying down tracks and conducting the raffle. Also Amie Begg was there conducting the silent auction.
I conducted two one and a half hour clinics. My first one was dubbed “The Webb Session”, and basically revolved just around bouldering. I had a motivated crew of 7 guys and together we worked on a number of awesome boulder problems set by the Inner Peaks route setters. The second clinic was a training for bouldering clinic and we focused on different techniques that I myself use when I’m looking to get to that next level. The clinics went very well and I got to say thanks to all those who attended!
After the clinics Sasha Digiulian, Matt Bosley and I had a session on the very cool free standing boulder. Inner Peaks had set us a slew of amazing and hard boulder problems to try and we threw ourselves at those for a good while. Following the session everyone gathered around the MASSIVE projector screen and we viewed three amazing short videos. I premiered my video first. I had shot a ton of footage in Switzerland so upon my return I threw together a 9 minute exclusive just for the attendees of Rocks for Research. The second video was a very well put together interview of Matt Bosley as he discussed his personal battle with Type 1 Diabetes. It was very informative and really opened my eyes to what people with this disease have to go through. Matt being there as a long time professional rock climber and a diabetic really elevated the situation and made myself and everyone else truly feel why we were there, and why this fundraiser was so important. I felt a real connection to the situation in that moment and I couldn’t have been happier. The third and final video was of Sasha. It was a very well put together video following her from a young girl to where she is now. It showcased some very nice climbing of her in Spain and really got me psyched to get back on a rope.
Then that was it. The fundraiser had come to a close and we were all standing and exhausted from the day. We said our thank you’s and goodbyes and headed out. Rocks for Research had succeeded and I couldn’t be more proud of the Charlotte climbing community for their kindness and hospitality. The main goal of this event was to attempt to raise $10,000 dollars and we exceeded that! We racked in somewhere around $11,000! Very cool and a job well done by everyone involved in this event. Huge thanks goes out to Charlie Long for coordinating this and I hope to be a part of it again next year.
