Redefining Balance 2013
Redefining Balance, Rincon Puerto Rico 2013 (A.K.A Rockstar Yogi Acrobatic Surfer Climber Slackers with some sick dance moves)
As we embarked on year 3 of the Redefining Balance Puerto Rico retreat we decided to go big and take the concept of “balance” into new locations, variations and proclamations. With the immense talent and experience of Kadri Kurgun as a co-teacher and the skillful crew of YogaSlackers and AcroYoga teachers representing we were able to step it up and add new elements to daily activities which included yoga, surfing, acro, slacklining, climbing, Thai massage, sunset kirtans and epic dance parties at our friend’s shop in town. The wildly talented crew of friends, facilitators and students here in Rincon took these week-long journeys to new heights and locations on this lush island terrain and Kadri and I were reminded how much fun it is to expose our friends and students to this idea of redefining balance and moving meditation through everything that we love to do.
A new retreat location on the beach provided us with lush green lawns to practice on as well as a palm tree filled slackline park that included a trick line, space line and long line set up for the whole week. Surf lessons took place literally in our back yard and students caravaned for daytime climbing field trips to check out other areas of the island, including the jungles and white sand beaches. Everyone enjoyed being outdoors for most of the day and finally settling down with Thai Massage or a dip in the pool and hot tub in the afternoon and evenings. Fortunately we also had a bunch of bodyworkers on location doing massages and adjustments keeping everyone feeling awesome and ready for more adventures.
This year we were also excited to add on a second retreat called Redefining the Inner Balance that was a chill time focused on connection, community and movement as meditation through the process of tuning in to the elements to find the subtle balance of energy all around us. The Inner Balance retreat included daily brief meditations, bodywork classes and connections to nature through learning about plants as medicine and using surfing, climbing, slacklining & acro as ways to “drop in” and be present. The second retreat also traveled to different locations including a bamboo tropical treehouse forest, remote white sand beaches perfect for water acrobatics and our friend’s private fruit farm here in Rincon where we learned about sustainable farming and growing your meals.
Words can’t really do the experience of these retreats justice or express how amazing all of the students were but fortunately Kadri’s photos are pretty phenomenal and will help give a sense of what went down for two weeks here in paradise. Hope you enjoy ‘em and if you’d like to join us in 2014 we have the dates set so you can mark your calendar (January 10-17th and Jan 31-February 7, 2014). Get ready for some new surprise locations and adventures!
