Steph Davis: Transformation
At my annual checkup, I discovered I’ve grown. I’ve been five feet five and a half inches since I was 20, and suddenly I’m a full five feet six inches tall! Climbing has led me to a daily yoga practice and hangboard training (a workout that involves lots of hanging), so perhaps I’ve simply elongated rather than actually grown. Either way, becoming officially taller is a clear measure of the transformative quality of the life I’ve chosen.
When I first went climbing, it seemed like a wonderful, delightful game. Over time, climbing became a teacher. Now I see it as an alchemist. Over half a lifetime of climbing is stamped on my body, from crowded toes and undainty knuckles to over-developed back and elongating spine. It seems that what we think, what we feel and what we do changes us in ways both physical and less visible.
Living a life of passionate intensity, in tune with the natural world, has changed not just my body, but also my psyche, my desires and my dreams. The things we do because we love them are so much more than just games to play. They’re marvelous elixirs that shape our bodies, minds and hearts, that transform who we are and who we are becoming.
