Photoshoots are my favorite part of my job and we just got back from a great one. We spent a week in Crested Butte, Colorado shooting our winter and holiday catalogs. It was hard to not fall in love with such a great community full of friendly faces and such character at every turn. That’s not to mention the amazing mountain scenery you are smack on top of! It was below freezing and the blizzarding snow only let up for about a day and half. Flying in and out of a blizzard, not my favorite thing, but I digress. All the bone chilling weather made me yearn for my sunny southern California home and the spring clothes from our new line that I usually wear day in and day out instead of a knee length down coat and snow boots. I’m always intrigued to see which pieces season-to-season seem to transcend the “season” and find a place in each collection no matter what the climate. This time the styles that caught my eye are in part the ones I couldn’t wait to get home and wear and also ones that I realized might be something it’s time to purchase for my fiancée. Here are my top pics from our Spring 2011 line that you’ll also be excited to see again and wear this Fall (and if you really wear them out you can get the new colors in August!).
For Women:

1. Amaya Dress: Perfect in the summer for a day at the beach or running errands around town with some cute sandals and a jean jacket. The dress is nothing if not easy to wear. In the winter and fall months I’ll add some tights and boots and an oversized sweater.
2. Julz Hoodie: This spring and summer I’ll be wearing it over my bathing suite top with some cut offs to the beach. When it get’s colder I’ll wear it with skinny jeans, boots, and a little leather vest.
3. Mackenzie Pant: Full-length yoga pants are something I wear all year round. I’ll wear these to yoga with one our great yoga tanks this season and then I’ll throw my Julz Hoodie over it in the Fall to beet the chill on my way from work to class. *available April 2011
For Men:

1. Linear Short: I love this short. They are so versatile. They work as swim trunks in the summer and athletic shorts all year round.
2. Sutra Pant: Timeless and season-less, this pant is key for yoga and even just lounging around the house & it’s made with organic materials as well.
3. Mandala Heathered T: This t is so soft and comes in great colors every season. It’s basic enough that it’s a great layering t under a button up our hoodie in the Fall and if it’s good enough for Chris Sharma…

Recently, we asked all of the men here at prAna what their favorite new spring style was. The tallies have been counted and, not to our surprise, the Men’s Linear Short was a top choice. A hybrid for multi-sport function, this short has kept up with anything we’ve put it up against. A little bit of stretch allows for mobility and the mesh pockets keep things lightweight without sacrificing utility. If you grab a pair, let us know what you think!

It’s Valentine’s Day. For every unabashed declaration of love, there is a corresponding cynic decrying the commercialisation of the day with its cards, chocolates and twee teddy bears. So, here’s my love letter – it’s to my PrAna trousers (KT Pant)!
This isn’t a standard gear review – it’s definitely a swooning, lovelorn look at a purchase that turned out better than I could ever have imagined. Last Easter, during a trip back to the UK, I became conscious that my limited travelling wardrobe had a gap – and so, given my impatience for the selection of women’s clothing in outdoor shops, I took a chance and bought this pair of trousers online through Gear for Girls. They rapidly became indispensable and even now are elbowing other items of clothing out of contention; they’d definitely be coming with me to a desert island, despite being black.
So, what makes them so great? Well, I’ve never thought of myself as fashion conscious. And anyone who has met me in the flesh will testify to this. But when it comes to buying gear suitable for the great outdoors, some kind of mass sight impairment seems to afflict the designers
and purchasers of women’s trousers. I wouldn’t normally wear a high waisted, tapered leg, with extra pleats to make sure my bum looks especially large – so why would I want to wear trousers like that when I’m out and about? Especially given the likelihood of photos being taken during whatever activity I might be enjoying. These prAna pants (we’ll give them that, they’re American) successfully look like a normal pair of trousers; in fact, the cut is just like a pair of jeans, with a lowish waist, proper waistband and actual pockets. The leg is straight, and the length is perfect for me (5’5″, if you’re interested), with a normal cut around the ankle – perhaps a bit breezy if the wind is strong, but perfect to fit over boots or trainers.
The fabric is stretchy, providing a range of movement whatever your activity, and also washes and dries quickly. With nothing much in the way of visible branding, excellent snag resistance and looking smartish even when dried overnight, the trousers have been pressed into use for work – a valuable commodity when living out of a small bag. And when I’ve worn them in colder weather (often with a pair of thermal tights), the snow simply brushes off. Here’s me wearing them on a snowshoe trip up to Dog Mountain, near Vancouver (right):
These trousers get pulled out whenever I climb (indoors or out), walk, bike (like on the trip a week or so ago to Clumber Park, with bike shorts under), snowshoe or do anything which requires me to leave my usual uniform of jeans behind. With a flattering but unobtrusive cut, they don’t draw attention, and that’s why they deserve this love letter. I feel less like I am sacrificing my modicum of style to practicality when I wear these; my only concern is what I’m going to do when they inevitably wear out!

Organic Cotton
Conventionally grown cotton consumes approximately 25% of the insecticides and more than 10% of the pesticides used in the world. Organic production systems on the other hand replenish and maintain soil fertility, reduce the use of toxic and persistent pesticides and fertilizers, and build biologically diverse agriculture. Third-party certification organizations verify that organic producers use only methods and materials allowed in organic production. Organic cotton is grown without the use of toxic and persistent pesticides and synthetic fertilizers. In addition, federal regulations prohibit the use of genetically engineered seed for organic farming.
We haven’t forgotten the beautiful women in your life either! Anvil Knitwear premiered a digital short at Farm Aid 25: Growing Hope for America Concert on October 2. The thought provoking video educates consumers about the impact of pesticide use on the environment and farmers and encourages consumers to support organic farmers. “The Message from Earth: Organic Matters digital short unveiled this weekend at Farm Aid is our latest initiative to reach both farmers and consumers and educate on the benefits of organic farming,” said Anthony Corsano, Anvil Knitwear CEO. “We believe that if farmers and consumers alike understand the impact of organic farming practices, they will make better choices.”
An evening of fashion and friends at the prAna flagship store in Boulder was a welcome relief from the devastating wildfires that have hit the area. PrAna’s Fall Fashion Show raffle proceeds benefited Boulder’s Four Mile Canyon fire and those affected. Enjoy the pictures…

We are always amazed at the creative ways stores share the prAna love in their windows.
Check out some very cool displays…

YOUME clothing is a collaborative recycling project with a desire to take that which is old, and make it new, locally and internationally. We do this through international clothing exchanges where new clothes are provided to those in need, and in exchange they give YOUME one of their oldest articles of clothing. A patch of their previously worn cloth is then stitched into a new article of clothing and the finished product is sold. 100 % of the profits made from those sales are put right back into the communities from which they originated. Funds are used to meet the needs of these communities through hands on involvement and funding of educational programs for orphans, as well as health care, and sustainable living for elderly villagers.
YOUME clothing is a partnership between people to produce a creative expression of the heart for the people. Our sole purpose is to turn their rags into their resources. An idea that was born in a village in Uganda by founder Willie Register has been made a reality by volunteer sewing groups that meet weekly in local southern California living rooms. One of a kind clothing is not the only thing that YOUME produces. We are focused on growing in a local and global community with a shared vision of embracing creativity and living authentic lives of service. We are learning to put others first as a way of life.
