Hood River Garlic // Earth Day Series

April 18th, 2012

As we awaken ourselves this spring, we felt it was a perfect opportunity to focus on the idea of ORGANIC. Each week in April we are bringing you a voice from the organic movement to share with you details on the subject, why this is important to you and how prAna is mindfully navigating organic in our own business.  This week’s post on Organics comes from Hood River Garlic and will be followed by posts from Textile Exchange and our own Director of Sustainability, Nicole Bassett. Tell us your thoughts…

prAna: Hood River Garlic is a certified organic garlic farm, located 60 miles east of Portland, in Hood River, Oregon. In 2010 they added 600 organic blueberry bushes with more to plant this spring. This blog post is by Terri Browne Hixson who owns the farm with her husband Eric. We reached out to Terri to hear more about why they chose organic farming and how the practice of organic reaches beyond just food, but to clothing as well.

HRG: We have been growing organic garlic since 1999. We have always been organic and we became Certified Organic by the Oregon Tilth in May 2002. This May marks our 10 year anniversary of our organic certification. From the very first garlic seed that we planted in 1999, to the 600+ blueberry bushes recently planted, we have always been organic. “A lot of farmers become organic to sell their crops for more money. For us, there was just no other way; we choose organic farming for the planet, children and the critters, not because of financial gain.” (This quote comes from the About Us section of our web site.)

If you are in a store and just look at price alone it can be easy to justify buying conventional products over organic. I think about where the product originated from and how was it grown, and I believe that organically grown food and cotton must come from a cleaner and safer environment. For example when planting garlic, I like to say “It all starts with the clove.” But in the bigger picture, when it comes to agriculture, “it all starts with the soil”. Soil health is an essential aspect of all farming, whether it is organic or conventional. Pesticides, herbicides and petroleum based fertilizers poison the earth; from the air we breathe, to the water we drink, to the soil we till to grow our food. It does not matter if the crop is grown for food, or clothing. Everything flows downstream, I prefer to buy organic knowing that I am not supporting agriculture that poisons the rivers and fish. One reason that organically grown food and cotton is more expensive than conventional is labor costs. A major labor expense for organic farmers is weeding, because we don’t rely on chemicals to kill and inhibit weeds, weeds are pulled by hand or mechanically. By spending a few extra dollars when you choose organic over conventional, you are helping to support organic farm workers to live happier and healthier lives by not being exposed to harmful chemicals.

prAna: And supporting organic farmers is not just about food – what about all the cotton farmers that are making their livelihoods from growing the fiber for many of our clothes.

HRG: Cotton is one of the most densely sprayed crops in the world. It is responsible for about 15% of the worlds conventional pesticide use. Most conventional cotton is grown in 3rd world countries where they do not have the restrictions on toxic chemicals like we have in the US and Europe. Many of these farmers are poor and cannot even afford to buy respirators or protective clothing to wear while spraying the poisonous chemicals, so it gets into their lungs and on their skin. They often spray all the way up to harvest time, so the overspray ends up affecting all of the farm workers in the field.

In organic farming, the field workers on organic cotton farms will not be exposed to these toxic pesticides. Instead of chemicals, they use mechanical and hand weeding techniques, the introduction of beneficial insects, crop rotation and intercropping (planting different crops together). They will not suffer from the respiratory problems and other health problems from being exposed to the toxic chemicals of conventional cotton farming.

The more we choose organic, the more organic products will become available to us. As consumers, higher demand of a product will help drive down prices, as long as there is supply and demand for that product. We are not talking about oil, we are talking about agriculture. And it all comes down to our planet, whether we are putting it on the dinner table or to clothe our backs, we need to take care of Mother Earth.

I have to acknowledge a company like prAna that provides organic products to consumers. Living in Hood River, I can’t afford the time or gas money to go to Portland to shop. I love to use prAna’s web site, buying prAna is so easy, the clothes have such great colors and designs, yet they are functional. From the yoga clothes, to casual clothes, to the hiking and climbing clothes, (I planted 600 blueberry bushes in the Bedford prAna pants I am wearing right now!) You don’t have to sacrifice anything to support your values when buying organic cotton clothing. As organic farmers, Eric and I love to support other organic farmers.

Your dollars are your voice. Please choose organic. It is the best choice for the soil, the air, wildlife, rivers, fish, animals and most importantly: children and you.

I’m not the type of person to spend time writing to a company about their product…

October 6th, 2011

Ok, this is another great letter that we had to share especially when Todd told us that his wife “insisted they do a mini photo shoot” all the way from Africa! The Stretch Zions are at home wherever you are…

I’m not the type of person to spend time writing to a company about their product. And I’m certainly not the type to spend any time on a yoga mat. But recently I was doing my annual shopping and comfy, durable, decent-looking pants was on my list. I saw a candidate but flinched a bit at the price. And when the REI employee gushed over its attributes, including that it was made by a yoga company, I smiled and put them back. Still, the other ones just didn’t fit, or were crazy expensive. So, when no one was looking, I grabbed them again and this time made for the dressing room. Hmmm. Definitely passed the comfort and look test so I reluctantly opened my wallet.

Soon after I embarked on a 2500 mile road trip with a wife and three children. I wore your zion stretch pants everyday. When I was inspecting them before buying I sort of scoffed at the button thingy on the lower leg. Yet soon I was rolling up to cool off or stroll on the beach. Even better I didn’t wash them once and they didn’t get nasty or ugly.

Now I’m back at work in Zambia (southern Africa) and your pants continue to serve me well. In fact, right before I left the land of high speed internet and infrastructure I ordered a second pair, this time olive. I hate spending money and I’ve never ordered clothes online before. But yesterday I wore them to a meeting with Ministry of Health officials and they had no idea what comfort I was sitting in. Best of all I’ve had no urge to do yoga.

Seriously: thank you for a great product that just works. Plus, I can’t help but show them off. “Look, they stretch!” If it’s a close friend I’ll even reveal the crotch air conditioning. Keep up the good work.

~Todd

My Girlfriend Insists That We No Longer Spend Time Together

May 12th, 2011

This story from a customer was too good not to share :)

I am sending you these shorts because they have nowhere else to go. . She tells me they are too worn out and that I just need to move on. She is even saying they can’t call my dresser home any more. There is no way I could bear to throw them away – there is still so much life in them. If I gave them to Goodwill and I happened to see them on someone else, jealousy would rip me apart. After all, we have been through so much together.

These shorts have been in countless countries on at least 4 continents. Twice, have they gone to India, probably close to the factory from which they were born. They’ve gone from bouldering to farmers market, to the beach and then downtown for dinner… all in the same day. We have endured so much together and I thought you should know how much I loved them.

If I had to pick one aspect that was my favorite, it would be the cut and fit. I just can’t seem to find any pants or shorts that fit me right – but these were stellar. The gusseted crotch, taper from waist to leg, and pockets all kind of fall under that category and led to freedom of movement and function. The fabric is amazing. I like the heavier material and the durability that comes with it (but that they are light enough to breathe). The big mesh pockets are also rockin’. The subtle stitching details and overall appearance kept me looking good. I could go on: organic cotton, double stitching, ykk zipper, easy care, blah blah blah.

Now, the bad: you stopped making them. Like all companies do these days, styles are constantly being changed, tweaked and discontinued. Had I only known, I would have bought 10 pairs.

I had the pleasure of meeting Lewis Abercrombie on a beautiful Sunday in Santa Barbara during the Earth Day festival. He was kind enough to entertain my thoughts and give me your info. The presence prAna has had since opening the (Santa Barbara) store has been great to see and I like supporting companies that stay true to their roots. Keep up the good work, and if you can, bring back these shorts!

Earth Day Santa Barbara Favorites

May 11th, 2011

We were so excited to be a part of the amazing Earth Day event in Santa Barbara this year! There were over 38,000 attendees during the two-day event and it was very inspiring. It was an honor to represent Santa Barbara Outfitters and prAna. Santa Barbara is a very local community-oriented city and is extremely focused on local businesses, local jewelers and artists. Observing people support local economy was really wonderful!!!

We were placed among other eco-friendly companies and were surrounded by some inspirational people making a difference in the apparel industry! We featured our favorite products that we believed fit in at Earth Day. The five categories we covered were: made in the USA, made from 100% organic cotton, made from hemp, made from recycled PET, fair trade made.

We have quite a few products that fall into these categories but we picked our favorites that are definite must haves for the season! Our Favorites for Earth Day… and every day

Time To Focus…

April 4th, 2011

There is nothing that makes us more proud of what we do than the letters we receive from our “tribe”! This is a great way to start the week and we humbly say… Thank You.

prAna,

I wish that I could write a thank you great enough for the clothes you manufacture. I started out roughly 13 years ago in climbing. A few years later (I dont recall how) I found me a pair of stretch zions. Since then I have been stuck on prAna and even influenced by the different sports that prAna markets their clothing to. I became a slack liner and have even dabbled in the art of Yoga.

While working at City Rock in Colorado Springs I had the great opportunity to let interested clients know that if they were going to get into climbing prAna sells the best clothing. I stayed in the hospital in a pair of sutras through my father’s ordeal with cancer. Hospitals can be an uncomfortable place but I never felt that way while wearing those pants. Now I work as a counselor for 4-5 year old children who are social and cognitively behind. Running around the playground is impossible in blue jeans but the stretch of the lycra in the pants really helps for bending and moving. All of these different parts to my story say this. I didnt have to worry about the clothes I was wearing. This gives me time to focus on my tasks, dreams, and desires. To me that says so much and for this reason I wanted to take the time to say thank you. I know my life would be of a lesser state/quality without the clothing that you passionately craft.

Keep Smiling,

~Jonathan Seubold
