San Francisco Giants Pitcher Barry Zito & Yoga

“Baseball is ‘America’s Pastime’ because during the late 19th and early 20th century it was probably the most widely played sport in the country. Baseball was to that time period as video games and television are to today. Before TV, Baseball was what many kids did after school and on the weekends and during the summer… etc. It was literally how America passed the time”.

Fast forward to the 21st century and there are a plethora of sports that people participate in but baseball still holds a special place in many people’s hearts.

Barry Zito is a Cy Young Award winning pitcher who is also self taught guitar player and although he is “right” handed, he throws and bats “leftie”. He credits yoga for much of his fitness and his ability to rehab from injury. Barry is definitely not your typical baseball player…

He has done yoga poses in the outfield, and meditates before games. In 2001, Zito espoused a universal life force that he credited with his midseason turnaround.  His mother Roberta named him after her brother Barry, a beatnik “freethinker” and acolyte of Zen who mysteriously vanished in 1964 at the age of 22 near Big Sur, California

As many professional athletes begin to incorporate yoga into their training routines, Barry Zito stands out as one of the most successful players in the major leagues. We are excited to see more world class athletes from high profile sports bringing yoga to the masses!
