Sierra Club: Deadly Coal Ash Near You?

There are over 2,000 toxic coal ash dumps across the country. Do you or your friends live near one? Coal ash is a dangerous byproduct of burning coal for energy containing heavy metals such as arsenic, lead and mercury that can seep into water supplies. The result: an increased risk of cancer, learning disabilities, birth defects and other illnesses. With over 150 million tons generated every year, and over 2,000 dumps across the country, toxic coal ash is a national problem in need of a national solution. Living near an unlined coal ash wet storage pond is more dangerous than smoking a pack of cigarettes a day.1 And even if the coal ash dump is lined, nearby communities still face a heightened risk of cancer, learning disabilities, birth defects and other illnesses.

Despite this scientific evidence that coal ash kills, there are no federal standards for the disposal of toxic coal ash — yet.  You can help change this and save lives by spreading the word about the danger of toxic coal ash to your social networks. Try the Sierra Clubs new Facebook app to find out HERE.
