There are over 2,000 toxic coal ash dumps across the country. Do you or your friends live near one? Coal ash is a dangerous byproduct of burning coal for energy containing heavy metals such as arsenic, lead and mercury that can seep into water supplies. The result: an increased risk of cancer, learning disabilities, birth defects and other illnesses. With over 150 million tons generated every year, and over 2,000 dumps across the country, toxic coal ash is a national problem in need of a national solution. Living near an unlined coal ash wet storage pond is more dangerous than smoking a pack of cigarettes a day.¹ And even if the coal ash dump is lined, nearby communities still face a heightened risk of cancer, learning disabilities, birth defects and other illnesses.
